Understanding Acute & Chronic Sinus Infections

Sinus infections are common, but when they become frequent or long-lasting, they may point to an underlying issue. If your symptoms keep coming back, it may be time to schedule an appointment.

Sinus infections that keep coming back?

If you’ve ever had a sinus infection, you know how miserable they can be. The pressure behind your eyes. The pounding headache. The constant congestion that doesn’t budge no matter what you take or how many tissues you go through.

It’s more than just a nuisance. And when they keep coming back over and over again?

That’s your body waving a red flag like some underlying issue may be at play. At B&B Sinus and Allergy Relief Centers, we help you figure out why you keep getting sinus infections — and how to finally get long-lasting relief.

What is a sinus infection?

Sinus infections (also called sinusitis) happen when the tissue lining your sinuses gets inflamed. Normally, those air-filled spaces (sinus cavities) help humidify the air you breathe and drain mucus out through your nose.

But when they’re swollen or blocked? Mucus builds up, sinus pressure increases, and suddenly your nose is dripping, your face aches, and your head’s in a fog.

Most people deal with the occasional sinus infection during cold or allergy season. However, if the symptoms linger… or keep coming back… that’s when it can turn into a chronic issue.

Common sinus infection symptoms

Everyone experiences sinus infections a little differently, but here are a few of the most common symptoms:

Some of our patients say it feels like a common cold that just won’t go away and others say it hits like a sudden freight train overnight. Either way, we understand your pain and know that relief can feel impossible — it isn’t.

Is your pain acute, chronic, or somewhere in between?

Sinus infections don’t all behave the same. Some clear up on their own. Others linger, relapse, or come back like clockwork.

Here’s how to tell the difference:

Acute sinus infections

Usually show up after a cold or allergy flare-up. They tend to last less than 4 weeks.

Chronic sinus infections

Can show up in the same way as acute, but can last longer than 12 weeks and be resistant to treatment.

Returning sinus infections

Can be long or short but keep returning. Usually you’re suffering with chronic infections if you deal with 4 or more each year.

If your pain is starting to feel like part of your routine, that’s not normal. You don’t have to put up with it any longer.

Why do sinus infections keep coming back?

That’s the most common question we get from our patients — and the truth is, it can be for any number of reasons.

Some of the most common culprits of long-lasting and recurrent infections:

  • Allergies that keep your sinuses inflamed year-round
  • Nasal blockages, like a deviated septum or polyps
  • Immune system issues that make it harder to fight off infection
  • Environmental triggers, like smoke or pollutants
  • Unresolved previous infections that never fully cleared up
  • And more

Sometimes it’s one of these factors. Sometimes it’s a combination. The only way to know the true cause? Is to take a closer look.

Is it time to see an ENT?

Here’s the thing — if you deal with one sinus infection a year and it’s easily treated, it’s not time to run to a specialist.

But if you’ve had way too many… or the symptoms won’t leave you alone… it’s probably time.

You might want to schedule with B&B if:

  • Your symptoms last longer than 10 days
  • You get multiple infections a year
  • You visit the urgent care often
  • You’re constantly relying on OTC meds just to get through the day
  • You’re feeling drained, foggy, or just off
  • You’ve already tried antibiotics, nasal sprays, or allergy meds
